Hole and pilot guidance

Tapped hole in the hub at the normal metric tap-drill size. A dog point needs a matching flat or dimple on the shaft.

Shaft collars, pulleys, gears and couplings

Door handles and knobs

Small grub screw locks the handle onto the spindle

A cup point permanently marks a precision shaft.
Thin hubs give too few threads and the screw works loose under vibration.
With no head there is nothing to grip if the socket strips - drilling it out is the only way.
